DJ Natural Gas Prices Rise on Colder Forecasts
By Nicole Friedman
NEW YORK--Natural-gas prices rose Monday as forecasts called for colder weather than previously expected in the next
two weeks, boosting demand expectations for the heating fuel.
November futures recently traded up 2.4 cents, or 1%, at $2.526 a million British thermal units on the New York
Mercantile Exchange.
Natural-gas consumption increases in cold weather, as residential and commercial buildings turn on indoor heating.
About half of U.S. households use natural gas as their primary heating fuel.
Forecasts released Monday show colder-than-average temperatures on the East Coast in the next six to 10 days,
according to MDA Weather Services.
"This market is beginning the week by pushing a bit higher off of weekend updates to the short-term temperature
views," energy-advisory firm Ritterbusch & Associates said in a note. "However, any weather=inspired price advances are
apt to be challenged by ample supply availability."
Physical gas for next-day delivery at the Henry Hub in Louisiana last traded at $2.44/mmBtu, compared with Thursday's
range of $2.35-$2.42. Cash prices at the Transco Z6 hub in New York last traded between $2.30 and $2.40/mmBtu, compared
with Thursday's range of $2.00-$2.30.
